Starting a blog for the first time is an amazing, yet intimidating experience. Thinking that people are actually going to read – and even share – something you wrote. It’s unlike any other feeling I can describe. But it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. Starting a blog is hard work, and there are a lot of pitfalls along the way. Especially if it’s your first time. So many pitfalls, in fact, that we’ve come up with a full list of 45 things we wish we knew before starting our first blogs. That way, you don’t have to make these mistakes yourself!

But who are “we” exactly, right? Well, this post is a group effort. However, doing all these steps – even though they might seem like a lot – is quite trivial, since you’re being taken by the hand along the way; first by your hosting company, and then by the WordPress dashboard itself. We’re going to cover everything from writing to SEO, designing images, marketing, tools, security, and a lot lot more.

4. Blogging Basics 101

So, you want to start a blog huh? Great idea! But…how the heck do you get started? There’s so much info out there on the web, and everyone’s telling you to do different things. Who do you listen to? Where’s the starting point?

Damnit, maybe you should just forget it – it’s too confusing! Well, hold up. I used to be a blogging newbie too. I had the same problems. I started my blog (BloggingBasics101.com) way back in 2006, and I knew less than nothing about blogging. In fact, it was only the week before I’d learned what a blog was.

Now I know a ton about them, and my blog’s doing pretty well – I receive more than 300,000 unique visitors per month which makes me consider myself someone you could listen to and learn from when it comes to building your own blog. I’m not some sort of Guru, but I certainly do know the basics.

I promise it’ll be simple, relatively easy, and definitely easy to understand (no stupid jargon). Sound good?

Awesome, let’s move on.

Why you should create a blog and join the blogging community

So below, I’m going to outline exactly what you need to do to get started and set up your own personal blog. Before we dive in though, I really want to talk about WHY you should build a blog.

Note: If you already have a solid idea of the whys, then skip this and go right ahead with the guide.

  1. Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. There are literally millions of blogs online (don’t worry, you can make yours stand out and get noticed!).
  2. It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others.
  3. You become a better person and a better writer.
  4. The best reason? You can make money doing it!

I bet you already knew all of that, but it’s nice to be reminded.

6. AMY LYNN ANDREWS

Wondering how to start a blog? I’ve been blogging for 16 years and I specialize in simple. In this beginner’s guide, I’ll show you how to start a blog simply and on a budget. No technical experience required. It’s easier and faster than you think!

The 7 steps to start a blog. Time needed: 5-10 minutes.

  1. Decide what to blog about
  2. Choose a blogging platform
  3. Choose a host
  4. Choose a plan
  5. Choose a domain name
  6. Set up your account
  7. Pick a theme

Let’s dive into each one…

1. Decide what to blog about

Choose a topic (a.k.a. niche) you enjoy. Otherwise it will be drudgery and who wants that? Also, make sure you have a lot to say. A blog requires a lot of content to get going and remain interesting.

What if I can’t decide on a blog topic?
What if others already blog about my topic?
What if I want a website instead of a blog? Do I need both?

2. Choose a blogging platform

A blogging platform (a.k.a. content management system or CMS) puts your words into blog form. There are many to choose from but WordPress is by far the most popular and widely recognized as the best. WordPress is free.

7. NEIL PATEL

Something big has been happening in the world of work. How is it possible that so many people, from all walks of life and all ages, are creating blogs and entire businesses online?

Can blobs of text, blended with a series of images really possess superpowers?

And, honestly, how many people want to read the scattered thoughts of an average person like you or me?

This blog you’re reading gets over 2,436,112 unique visitors a year and generates well over a million dollars a year in revenue. Just look at my revenue stats for a 30 day period:

$381,772 a month is a lot of money… especially for a blog. Now you aren’t going to generate that much money, but it is realistic for you to make 1/100th of what I am making.

Today I’d like to give you every single step that you need to follow to create a blog, growing it AND learning how to monetize it in just 47 minutes.

So let’s get started and go over how to make a blog and teach you how to become a blogger.

Step 1. Unleash ideas within you

If you want to create a blog, you don’t need a revolutionary idea. But, your blog should be focused on something specific.

Remember that no idea, no matter how good, is truly unique.

But, you have unique experiences. You have a distinct voice. And, you probably have a vibrant personality that will attract others like your family and friends.

When it comes to choosing your blog’s niche, there are 2 key questions to ask yourself.

8. WEBSITE SETUP

In 2020, it’s easier than ever to start a blog – even if you are a complete beginner who doesn’t understand anything about coding or web design.

With a little bit of guidance and the right tools, you can have your very own personal or professional blog up and running in less than 30-minutes.

Writing blog posts and content can take much longer, though.

In this step-by-step guide we’ll walk you through every part of the process while helping you avoid the common mistakes new bloggers tend to do.

Sounds good? Then let’s dive in and get started.

STEP 1 – Choose your blog topic

The very first thing you need to do is choose a topic for your blog.

Most successful blogs focus on one thing. May it be food, travel, fitness, fashion or simply about your business.

We recommend choosing a topic that you feel passionate about or interested in. It’s even better when you are an expert at something, this helps you to grow your blog through writing good, quality content to help others.

Tips for choosing a blog topic:

  • are you an expert in something?
  • are you passionate about something?
  • are you learning something new and want to write about your process?

Here’s an example: If you are highly interested in fitness and you like to train, it’s wise to share your wisdom in a blog that is related to fitness or cover topics on training and nutrition. Through the blog, you’ll be able to get new clients.

9. MICHAEL D. POLLOCK

With respect, I must disagree with Mr. Zinsser. We all know the most important part of any article is the title. Without a compelling title, your reader won’t even get to the first sentence. After the title, however, the first few sentences of your article are certainly the most important part.

Journalists call this critical, introductory section the “lede,” and when properly executed, it’s the bridge that carries your reader from an attention-grabbing headline to the body of your blog post. If you want to get it right, try one of these 10 clever ways to open your next blog post with a bang.

Be Short and Direct

Minimalists rejoice. Less is more in some cases. This method seems to be especially useful for list posts with a compelling and descriptive title.

10. FIRST GUIDE

Do you want to learn how to start a blog?

More than 6,340 people started their blogs with the help of this guide.

Hi, my name is Anya. I’ve been blogging for more than eight years and love every moment of it. Blogging helped me find my first job and earn money on the side.

When I was learning how to create a blog back in 2010, it took me some time to find all the right information online, and I had to look for it on different websites. That’s why I’ve created this free step-by-step blog tutorial to teach beginners how to make a blog fast and easy. It’s not as complicated as many people think.

Why are you starting a blog?

Do you want to communicate something, like a message or an idea? Do you want to build a community around your love for a cause? Do you want to keep your followers and fans updated on what’s the latest with your brand? Do you want to explain how your product or service works and why people should buy it?

A blog can help you inform, educate, promote and even sell, but only if you are clear about your intention from the start.

Hence, take some time to figure out your message and the purpose of your blog. In the meanwhile, here are several reasons why many people make a blog and enjoy blogging:

  • To enhance writing and thinking skills
  • To establish expertise
  • To increase self-confidence
  • To network with others in the industry
  • To make money blogging

There are many ways to make money by starting your own blog; you can sell products and merchandise online or place ads and receive compensation from brands by promoting their products and services – considering that 61% of online customers make purchases based on recommendations from a blog, this could turn into a highly profitable endeavor for you.
