In 2009, the world was falling apart, and my net worth was taking a beating. I thought it would be a good idea to start a personal finance site to help myself and others make sense of chaos. After all, I had spent 10 years working in the finance industry, got my MBA from Berkeley, invested and saved aggressively, and still got financially rocked!
Since the financial crisis, more than 50 million visitors have stopped by Financial Samurai to learn, share, and grow. Financial Samurai delves deeper into investing, real estate, retirement planning, career strategies, and more, so we can all achieve financial independence sooner, rather than later.
Every article is written based off firsthand experience to provide the most helpful insights possible. Money matters are too important to be left up to pontification.
Financial Samurai has been highlighted in major publications such as Forbes, The Wall Street Journal Online, Business Insider, The Consumerist, The Sydney Herald, The Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times. I have also done interviews with AARP, Newstalk Radio 910AM (KKSF San Francisco) and Bloomberg.
If you are looking to get an honest and in-depth review of the best financial products to help you achieve financial independence, take a look at my Top Financial Products page. I’ve literally spent hundreds of hours researching, analyzing, and using these products to make sure I only highlight the best products for my users. I’ve cut through the clutter so you don’t have to.

Let’s see here, what can I tell you about myself… Well, I’m 6’1, rock a ‘hawk, love drinking beer, blaring hip-hop, collecting coins, talking about money, and now playing with my two three adorable baby boys (awwwww).
While I *thought* I was The Man when it came to money years back, I really didn’t get my act together until we bought our first home in 2007 for over $350,000 (with no money down, on a whim, and when we were looking to rent! (What the hell was wrong with us??)).
Needless to say it was a much needed wake-up call.
Soooooooo, I tracked my expenses for 3 months, made a budget, read some books (here’s a list of my faves, as well as other killer resources), became an “adult,” and quickly realized the following calculation was more than accurate:
Budgets = Confidence = Sexy
It’s been smooth sailing ever since! I’ve continually tracked my net worth (now over $800,000), paid attention to my money day in and day out, stumbled across the great world of personal finance blogging and idea sharing (this blog got started in Feb of 2008), randomly turned this into my full time “real job” a few short years later, and now here we are today – 20 million views later! It’s been an incredible ride to say the least.
My goal with this blog is to get people to stop and *pay attention* to their money. Especially you younger gen. You won’t find any long in-depth instruction manuals or anything else that bores me to death here, as I really want this to be a fun place to share and interact with each other. I think this comment from a random passer-by sums it up perfectly, “he’s the Miley Cyrus of finance,” haha… I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a compliment, but I’m taking it as one anyways 😉
Money Under 30 has everything you need to know about money, written by real people who’ve been there. This site was founded in 2006 by David Weliver, who dug himself out of more than $80,000 in debt in just three years.
If you’re in over your head too, we can help!
Maybe you’re here because after you pay rent and buy groceries, you struggle to save anything at the end of the month.
Maybe you think you should start building credit—but you’re afraid to apply for a credit card.
Or you’re looking to buy a new car or your first house, and you don’t really know where to start.
Regardless of what brought you here, you’re in the right place. And you’re not alone. Young people are struggling right now, and mostly for reasons outside their control. We’re here to help you take back some of that control.
I’m Liz, better known as Mrs. Frugalwoods, and I write about a wide range of topics, including my experiences as a parent, my adventures as a novice homesteader, and the financial decisions that made our life possible.
My philosophy is that managing your money wisely enables you to pursue unusual aspirations and opens up a world of options for how to live your life.
Through the application of frugality–coupled with good incomes and judicious financial management–my husband and I have created a life that we love living every single day. It’s not a life beholden to consumerism or the drive for material perfection or the incessant clarion call for more.
I started Frugalwoods in April 2014–before we moved to the country and before we had children–so the arc of my writing has changed over time, as have my thoughts and opinions. I often articulate that there are two sides of the financial independence equation–income and expenses–and that the more you earn, the more you can save.
If this sounds like you, welcome home. You’ve found a great community in this little pocket of the internet.
Afford Anything is a movement rooted in one idea: You can afford anything, but not everything — and that’s true not only for your money, but also your time, focus, energy and attention.
This opens two questions:
- How can we make smarter decisions about our money, time and life?
- How can we align our daily behaviors and habits with the lifestyle we
value most?
Afford Anything explores the answers to these two critical questions.
Along the journey, we take interesting forays into topics like investing, travel, lifestyle design, financial independence, and any other topic that jumps into this curiosity playground. We swap stories and ideas about real estate, entrepreneurship, productivity, personal development and a philosophy of money.
Each of these conversations are portals into a larger framework of making smarter choices and building a better life. If you’re intrigued, explore our blog and podcast. Better yet, download our free book, Escape, and join our free online community of 60,000+ subscribers.

When I graduated from college, I did what society expected: I got a job.
Shocking, eh?
I landed my dream gig: I was a newspaper reporter in a scenic Colorado town. I loved my colleagues; I had a blast everyday in the newsroom. I didn’t earn much — $21,000 per year — but I enjoyed my work. Life was awesome. Except for one teeny-tiny little problem: I lacked freedom.
Get Rich Slowly is a site for anyone who craves greater financial freedom.
- Are you deep in debt? I’ll share tips for digging out of debt and building a better financial future.
- Do you want to buy a house and/or send your kids to college? I’ll help you do that too.
- Have you been wondering how to get started with stock-market investing? I’ll teach you how to do so without gambling or excessive risk.
- Are you one of those crazies with eyes on early retirement? I totally get it. Because I managed to retire early myself, I’m happy to show you how you can do the same.
You won’t find any “get rich quick” schemes here. You won’t find multi-level marketing fads or hot stock tips here. I’m not going to give you a hard sell on any products or books. What you will find at Get Rich Slowly is daily information about personal finance and related topics.
I’ll share stories about debt elimination, saving money, and practical investing. I’ll post occasional reviews of books, magazines, and software. I’ll scour the web for the latest personal finance tools and articles. I’ll also post news on related topics like simplicity, frugality, and personal development. (I believe that personal growth is systemic, that in order to improve financially, you have to improve in other areas of your life.)
Welcome! Enjoy your personal quest toward financial freedom.
Hello and welcome to my personal finance and lifestyle blog! I created this blog in order to help me improve my finances (one example – due to this, I was able to pay off $38,000 in student loans in 7 months), keep track of my progress, and to help readers improve their finances along the way.
My name is Michelle and I just finished living in an RV and touring North America. Now, I am living on a sailboat, preparing to cruise the world on SV Paradise. We sold our house a few years ago, and have been traveling full-time ever since!
I am a young adult who graduated from an expensive private university in May of 2010 with a lot of student loan debt. I graduated from college after 2.5 years with two undergraduate business degrees, honors, and around $20,000 worth of student loan debt.
I then graduated again in August of 2012 with my Finance MBA with even more student loan debt.
With my master’s degree included, I had around $38,000 altogether when I graduated (these are now all paid off).
My student loan debt was a big reason why I started this blog.
It’s time to uplevel your life. Whatever you want, you can have. It’s not your job to decide whether it’s realistic. It’s your job to want it. I’ll show you how to create it. I help thousands of women (just like you) live a life on purpose. If you want more happiness, more balance, more love, more purpose, more money, more play, less stress, less anxiety, less worry, then you’re in the right place. I’m here to help you design your dream life.
Let me start by saying I used to be so stressed, stuck in scarcity, and just generally unhappy most of the time.
None of my life seemed to be working… my job (as a lawyer then financial planner), my student loan debt, my relationships… I was struggling with all of it, and I couldn’t figure out why.
Then I started a personal development journey that led me to become a Certified Life Coach.
Now, I’m lucky enough to say that’s what I do for a living.
What I want you to know is that everything I teach is what I do in my life.
I’ve completely changed my life through this work.
I’m happier, I’m internally balanced, I know how to process negative emotions (and do hard things), I quit drinking, I’m dating the love of my life, I quit practicing law and financial planning to build my own business, I paid off my debt, and I consistently set and achieve crazy goals.
It’s important to me that you know I’m doing the work I teach. That’s why I’m so passionate about it. I know it works from personal experience.
So, if this is what you want for your life… more happiness, more balance, more love, less stress, less anxiety, more intentionality, more money, less busyness, more play… then you’re in the right place.
I love reading income reports and showing people a “peek” behind my online business. Not because I want to brag, but I share it because I really want everyone to know that if I (a girl with a theatre degree and zero online or marketing experience) can find a way to build an online business and make money, you can too.
Whatever you want to do: quit your job, start a family, travel the country in a van…I’m here to encourage it. But I know from first-hand experience how any big dream takes some type of money.
Which is where I come in: from a shopping addict with major debt to six-figure online entrepreneur- I‘m going to show you how money is the ultimate tool to help you live out your “best life.”
